About this event

Pre-Concert Lecture 6:30 pm - Dr. Lynette Bowring

Charles V (1500-1558), colonial despot, ruthless emperor, or enlightened ruler? Charles was probably all of these things. The glories of his Imperial Chapel survive in the remarkable music of the most famous composers of the day: Nicolas Gombert, Thomas Crecquillon, Jacobus Clemens non Papa, and Pierre de Manchicourt. Charles, a devout Catholic, was said to have possessed an ear for elegant music, and the selections on this program leave no doubt. Music from his chapel lifted the veil between the heavenly and secular realms. Along with the vast array of Mass settings, a considerable number of commissions memorialized political conquests and state occasions in an elegant and varied tapestry of musical styles. This concert will feature the Missa Caro mea by Clemens and the astounding Magnificat tertii et octavi toni by Gombert. Completing the program are state motets by Clemens, Gombert, and Crecquillon, as well as Manchicourt’s motet, Caro mea, on which Clemens’ mass is based.
